Serving Those Who Need It Most While Giving Thanks for Those Who Serve
On Thanksgiving Day, the Winter Park Alumni Chapter, along with the Winter Park Kappa League, assisted the Orlando Metro Salvation Army in preparing for their annual “Helpings from the Heart” Thanksgiving feast. This was sponsored by Golden Corral and was the largest Thanksgiving meal event in Central Florida. About 20,000 individuals were fed a hot meal. Over 25 WPAC and Kappa League volunteers were present amongst 1,000 plus assistants.
Volunteering brothers and young men of Kappa League helped with event preparation; cleaning up the facility, setting up tables, placing silverware and arranging food items. They also made handwritten thank you cards to send to active duty military service members overseas. Some WPAC members also colored turkeys with other volunteers to send in addition to the thank you notes. This event was held at the Salvation Army Metropolitan Orlando Command in downtown Orlando, Florida.
About 6,000 pounds of turkey was handed out by volunteers and over 8,000 meals were delivered to nursing homes, shut-ins. churches, and other local facilities. Since Winter Park Alumni Chapter’s Charter in 1996, the chapter has participated in Thanksgiving service projects annually. The “Helpings from the Heart” Thanksgiving dinner began in 1992.
