5 Scholarship Recipients Named After Record Breaking Application Process
After an extensive selection process, five well deserving young men were awarded the Jack LeFlore Memorial Scholarship to aid in their post-secondary endeavors. The recipients representing Orange and Seminole counties, William Alexander, Christopher Brown, Eric Perez, Javier Ramirez and Ja’lan Rose, were among 41 applicants; the largest number of students to turn to scholarship packets in Winter Park Alumni Chapter’s history. Also, the average applicant pool grade point average was 3.83 on a 4.0 grading scale.
$2,000 was this year’s payout to each award recipient. They will be given the funds directly after verification of enrollment is submitted. Therefore, if the young men qualify for public/federal aid, it will not be affected by this scholarship. The students can also purchase books and other college related expenses with the award monies if necessary.
In this 2018-2019 school year, The Winter Park Kappa Foundation allotted $10,000 for the Jack LeFlore Memorial Scholarship. The Foundation and the Winter Park Alumni Chapter present these awards annually as part of a joint mission to provide higher education opportunities to at-risk or disadvantaged youth. 2018 marked 12 years since the scholarship’s inception.
